Corrosion resistance
316L is widely used in the chemical industry due to its excellent corrosion resistance. 316L is also a derivative of 18-8 austenitic stainless steel, with 2 ~ 3% Mo element added. On the basis of 316L, many kinds of steel are also derived. For example, 316Ti is derived by adding a small amount of Ti, 316N is derived by adding a small amount of N, and 317L is derived by increasing the content of Ni and Mo.
The existing 316L in the market is mostly manufactured according to American standard. Due to cost considerations, steel mills generally put the Ni content of products as far as possible to the lower limit. According to the American standard, the Ni content of 316L is 10 ~ 14%, while that of daily standard is 12 ~ 15%. According to the minimum standard, there is a 2% difference in Ni content between the American standard and the Japanese standard, which is quite huge in price. Therefore, the customer still needs to see clearly whether the product should refer to ASTM or JIS standard when purchasing 316L products.
The Mo content of 316L makes the steel has excellent resistance to pitting corrosion and can be safely applied to the environment containing Cl- and other halogen ions. Since 316L is mainly used for its chemical properties, the steel mill has a slightly lower requirement on surface inspection of 316L (relative to 304), and customers with higher requirements on surface should strengthen surface inspection.
